Going for the Look In today’s younger, trendy, fashion stores, people are being hired for their looks and less because of their brains. Marshal Cohen, a senior industry analyst, argues about why hiring better looking people helps a store’s environment. Making a certain brand more desirable to buy, meaning the company shall make more money. Stores such as Abercrombie and Fitch have already set their image using this technique and have become quite successful. Hiring attractive people is not illegal, but it is indeed useful and profitable. Popular fashion stores know that using good looking employees will make them money. Walking into any one of these stores, I immediately notice how great the people are looking there. I then begin to wonder if buying these clothes will make me look great also. This is exactly what Cohen mentioned about and quite frankly, he’s right. The effects of using these walking billboards have affected me, and I am just one of the mass of people that also are going to be affected. Not only does having a nice environment persuade a person into buying a product of the store, it also makes the store a place that someone would want to just hang out in. And of course it is pretty hard to just hang out without buying anything. This highly profitable idea is easy as just offering an attractive person that walks in the store a job. Certain stores have a certain image that is shown by the employees and models representing it. Abercrombie and Fitch for example, has a Caucasian, preppy image. So to keep this image, Abercrombie prefers to hire preppy looking Caucasians. Tom Lennox, Abercrombie’s communications director says, â€Å"Brand representatives are ambassadors to the brand. We want to hire brand representatives that will represent the Abercrombie and Fitch brand with natural classic American style, look great while exhibiting individuality, project the brand and themselves with energy and enthusias m, and make the store a warm, inviting place that provides a social experience for the customer. † This is another reason why people would buy this brand, simply to copy the image of a preppy Caucasian. Different brands have different images that set an environment that attracts different groups of people. Implementing the use of an image is an ingenious way to simply make more money, but there are others who disagree to this idea. Discrimination is a huge argument that is used when trying to prevent the hiring of only good looking employees of only certain ethnicities. There is nothing wrong when hiring someone because of the fact that they look great. If this was the problem, models could be ugly, fat, skinny, and anyone could get the job if they wanted to. The only real problem I see is these companies hiring only certain ethnicities. This is a favoring of a certain ethnicity, but mainly to set an image. People who do not get the jobs because of their ethnicity make t he argument of why this is discrimination, but really they aren’t being hired because their ethnicity is hated. It is just because they cannot display the image as well as the company would prefer. Hiring just because of looks is a profitable action that has others opposing the idea. Companies will choose whether or not to do this, but it is inevitable to avoid. There is modeling and other jobs that require good looks. American Express works with both consumers and business with their financial planning as well as offers numerous amounts of credit card products and travel assistance. They dined earlier in the hotel restaurant before retiring to their room. He left at nine o’clock this morning.† â€Å"Is that all?† Mrs Clifford asked. â€Å"Yes, that is all Ma’am; I will have another update soon.† Mrs Clifford listened as the phone was hung up on the other end, and then replaced the receiver. She glanced at the painting on the wall above her. It was of Patrick when he was a little younger. His eyes seemed to pierce hers, and for a second, she almost felt guilty about having him followed. Raquel caught up with him a few blocks from the hotel. As she was trained, she stayed out of his view. She watched as he entered a coffee shop, and then entered the shop after two more people had gone in. She found a table close to Patrick and listened to him order a cappuccino, then the rustle of the newspaper pages as he read it. He didn’t seem to be going anywhere, so she ordered an orange juice. After ten minutes, Raquel saw Laura, the woman he had spent the night with, walk into the coffee shop, and after glancing behind her at the street, slide into the seat beside Patrick. â€Å"Were you followed?† Raquel heard Patrick say. â€Å"No,† replied Laura. After that, Patrick and Laura became seemingly oblivious to the world, and started kissing. Raquel rose, paid for her orange juice, and exited the shop. Once she was outside, she crossed the street, turned and took out her camera. She took a quick series of photos of Patrick and Laura, and then put away the camera. Mrs Clifford would be happy she thought, well, as happy as possible. She had proof now, and that’s what Mrs Clifford had paid her for. She went home, developed the photos, and placed them in a blank envelope. She addressed the envelope, and then posted the letter. ‘A job well done’, the Private Investigator thought as she tucked her hands into her pockets and started to walk home. Mrs Clifford opened the envelope, and pulled out the photographs. There were six in total, all showing Patrick and Laura in various stages of canoodling. Mrs Clifford’s face darkened as she looked at each one. ‘How could he? In public?’ she thought as the maid, Jenkins walked into the room. She hastily pushed the photographs into the envelope again. The last thing she needed was the staff to be talking about this. â€Å"Tea, Mrs Clifford?† asked Miss Jenkins. â€Å"Yes, Thankyou.† Miss Jenkins poured the tea into a bone china teacup and handed it to Mrs Clifford. Mrs Clifford pulled the photographs out of the envelope again, as Miss Jenkins left the room, and looked at them as she sipped her tea. Mrs Clifford recognised this woman ‘Laura’. She worked in Patrick’s office. The photographs were not enough. She needed to know more. Mrs Clifford picked up the telephone and dialled. â€Å"Browning Private Investigators,† Raquel answered the phone. â€Å"Good Afternoon. It’s Mrs Clifford.† â€Å"Good Afternoon Mrs Clifford. I trust you received the photographs? How can I help you?† â€Å"I received the photographs, and they were good, but now I need more.† â€Å"More, Mrs Clifford?† The Private Investigator asked. â€Å"Yes, more. I need to know more about Patrick and this ‘Laura’ woman. I will pay you double the amount I payed you last time.† â€Å"Mrs Clifford, I would be pleased to help you,† Raquel responded. She listened as Mrs Clifford said, â€Å"Well then we’re settled,† and hung up. The private investigator wouldn’t have taken this job for just anyone, but Mrs Clifford had money to burn, and the private investigator had a hole in her pocket. She grabbed her backpack which had all of her equipment in it, and set off to find Patrick. Raquel found him an hour later, in a shopping mall. He was in a lingerie store, but she couldn’t see Laura anywhere. She continued to watch as Patrick looked through all the different things that the shop had to sell. She was taking pictures of this when Laura appeared from one of the change rooms. She walked over to Patrick and exchanged some words, and then Patrick gave her a lacy outfit to try on, kissed her, and left the store. The private investigator was still snapping photographs when he stopped at a jewellery store. She continued taking photographs as he walked up to the counter, and briefly spoke to the saleswoman. The saleswoman disappeared into a back room, and the private investigator stopped taking photographs to replace the film. Once she had done that, she started taking photographs as the saleswoman reappeared with a box in her hand. The saleswoman opened the box revealing a diamond ring. Patrick nodded, and then paid. The private investigator smiled. Mrs Clifford would be happy with her work. She left, and posted the photographs. Mrs Clifford answered the door when Patrick arrived. He had Laura with him. Mrs Clifford already knew what she was about to hear, thanks to the private investigator. She wasn’t sure she liked it, but she really had no choice in the matter. Introduction Abnormal behavior comes from many different backgrounds of all ages, cultures and religions. Abnormal Psychology is made of all different factors and within those factors branch out into the abnormal behavior that is so many people. Personality is what shapes behavior and the cultural around a person no matter what age or religion can affect a person to start with abnormal behavior. In this paper one will find that age, cultural and religion does play a factor defining what abnormality is about. What is normal and what is abnormal behavior? AgeAge is a huge factor in abnormal psychology and in defining and determining if there is normal or abnormal behavior being used. As we grow up and get older we change and we act differently, our age is a huge factor because with age we learn more and more and act differently and this can make our behaviors different as well and that is why age is a challenge to knowing if behavior is normal or abnormal. There are many challenges in determining normal from abnormal but age is definitely a big one and is looked at and considered before clarifying if a behavior is normal or abnormal.When looking at someone’s behavior and trying to distinguish if it is normal or abnormal we must look at their age as well. Behaviors that might be abnormal at one age group might not be abnormal in a different age group (ccvillage. buffalo. edu, N. A. ). Someone who is an adult and in their thirties is less likely to act immature or childish, it is not normal, compared to someone who is seven and a child still. If an abnormal behavior is found then age is looked at, if this child has an abnormal behavior will he or she grow out of it as they age or do they need help?These are a few things they look at and think about when age is involved. Age also determines whether or not a certain behavior can be trouble in the future. When trying to diagnosis someone’s behavior it is harder at a younger age and the age really needs to be looked at and taken into consideration to make sure that the behavior that is being diagnosed isn’t just something someone at that age might do. There are many challenges when diagnosing a behavior normal or abnormal but age is a big challenge that needs to be taken seriously and looked at carefully. Culture Culture and behavior are just like two clashing forces.What one side feels is a normal behavior, the other side may identify as an abnormal behavior. Imagine going into a country that you are not familiar with. Being exposed to different environment and different ways of life can be difficult, and can even test the comfort zone. One country may have a variety of foods to choose from, while the other one may offer what the land has to give like rice, bread and even rats and bugs. Aside from experiencing other cultures, there is also the case of finding abnormalities and judging between normal and abnormal within our own communities.Culture does not only include food differences, but can be a variety of other classifications like intelligence and social status. â€Å"Intelligence there is a normal distribution of IQ scores. There could be a situation where an immigrant begins school in his new country, and automatically he is stereotyped as a less intelligent person because of his cultural background. Finally, there is also the social norm, which is what all the normal people classify themselves as.While children are advancing through grade school, they classify one another as normal or abnormal. The cool kids and the majority of the regular, less exciting kids would be classified amongst themselves as normal. The other children like the girl who picks her nose, the bad student in the classroom and sometimes even the really smart children would not fit amongst the social norm, and be classified as abnormal. â€Å"Someone who frequently violates these unwritten rules is seen as abnormal. This is a very powerful and persuasive definition. It is seemingly common-sense.Norms are so deeply ingrained they seem absolute† (Ccvillage. buffalo. edu, N. A. ). Religion Religion creates another dimension of defining normal and abnormal behavior. Religion adds the dimension of morality. Religions consider immoral behavior to be abnormal behavior, and each religion has its own definition of immoral behavior. Abnormal behavior is behavior that is considered unusual for any given culture, society, or religion. Some religions consider tattooing and piercing the body is abnormal behavior while some cultures require tattooing and piercing as a right of passage.A verse in the Bible states â€Å" Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD. (Leviticus 19:28)† Many religions, such as Christianity, use this verse to prove that tattooing and piercing is abnormal behavior and that it is immoral, while some Muslims receive a tattoo as proof they visited Mecca. A major challenge involving religion and abnormal behavior involves the Roman Catholic Church and exorcism. According to Margoni, L, children who are abused, mistreated, or rejected by parents or siblings, may become possessed by an evil spirit and be in need of exorcism.The child might exhibit abnormal behavior by abusing drugs and alcohol, and may suffer from depression. A clinician would prescribe counseling and possibly medication for the child, and would be a very different treatment of the child than the child would receive from a priest. Many behaviors would be thought of as abnormal according to religious views, societal/ cultural and clinical views, but the treatment could be very different. Many churches offer counseling for psychological and emotional problems and offer help that is in agreement with the beliefs of that particular religion.Many other examples exist concerning the challenge of religion in defining abnormal behavior, and how religious beliefs sometimes cont radict modern psychological views and science. Individuals must use common sense and seek out credible clinicians and religious leaders when in need of psychological help. Conclusion Normal and abnormal behavior can be explained through different situations where one can be able to determine what I normal and abnormal. Age may determine certain behavior, a cultural background may determine different beliefs that may give off different emotions and even religions can determine a different way of worship.
